Book Review: Sundiver, by David Brin

This book is basically goofy fun. It has some great gee-whiz technology, neat aliens, and interesting extrapolations on future society and fields of science like psychology and animal research that don't get much attention in sf. Its basic premise of a manned mission into the sun is simply awesome. That said, not all story elements hung together perfectly for me. The author kept introducing new things, and cursory treatment kept it from coalescing around a center. The characters were sort of flat, too. It seemed Star Trekky, in a good way, but also reminded me of Fritz Leiber's The Big Time (of which I am no fan) for its structure as a whodunit mystery.
